it's 3:40, which is later than i thought it was. but i did manage to repair the toilet, which means 100% less leakage. here's to being handy

also, here's a hurrah for the 60+ degree weather today. which is a big plus as i've got the front door open right now full to air out the place. i figured out that the fire place is far from the most efficient. in fact, you can lay on the floor and see daylight coming down. probably due to the warm air outside, the smoke didn't drift up and out quite like it should, leaving a bit in here for me to breath. it's not thick, but i doubt i'll ever use the fireplace again as anything more than a decorative item.

Two drunken moose invade home for elderly

STOCKHOLM, Sweden --They rarely have problems with drunks or rowdy animals, but residents of an elderly home in southern Sweden had to deal with both when a pair of intoxicated moose invaded the premises.

The moose -- a cow and her calf -- had become drunk over the weekend by eating fermented apples they found outside the home in Sibbhult, southern Sweden, said Anna Karlsson, who works there.

Police managed to scare them off once, but the large mammals returned to get more of the tempting fruits. This time the moose were drunk and aggressive, forcing police to send for a hunter with a dog to make them leave.

Police did not pursue the culprits, but made sure all apples were picked up from the area, local police chief Bengt Hallberg said. No one was hurt.

economic analysis - it makes you look smart

As I reviewed comments posted to this discussion, it seemed to me than many are unaware of or misinformed about the economic factors relating to conflict of energy sources like oil. As I believe that they will have an important impact on the future conflicts over oil and such, I will try to bring them in my discussion of Klare's book.

The first major misperception and probably most important is the idea that US imports will be unaffected by disruptions to oil exportation in countries that do not export to the US. This misses the point that oil and natural gas are commodities on a world market, and thought geographical proximities and other institutional arraignments will bring Canadian, Venezuelan, or Saudi oil to the US for now, a disruption somewhere in the oil market will change this situation. For instance, a large portion of energy produced in the Caspian states is bought by Europe, while China and Japan consume large amounts of Iranian oil. If for any reason, like regional conflict, Europe or East Asia were unable to receive its energy from its current sources, it would go looking elsewhere. This would place additional demand on other sources, including those the US relies on, and would lead to a rise in oil prices that would pressure the US to consume less. Ultimately this means that perceived "safe" sources of oil are not any guarantee that oil will be available at current levels while oil is sold as a commodity on an open market.

The second misperception that I have seen in the discussions is related to domestic oil resources. Similar to points made above, it seems to be believed that producing additional oil domestically is agood way to deal with rising demand on oil produced in regions of conflict. Yet again, this misses the point that oil is a commodity.
Short of the institution of price controls by the government, oil produced locally will be sold at the prevailing price of the world market. This is why US oil companies are making record profits, usually at the expense of US consumers. The only way domestic oil production could be a solution to US energy problems is if it could be expanded to keep pace with rising demand. But as is pointed at in Klare's book, this is impossible considering the small amount of reserves contained in the US.

Besides the points made above, one thing not considered in the discussion is the effective subsidization of oil consumption by US intervention in the Middle East. Though it is not reflected at the gas pump, the costs of keeping regimes in power and keeping energy sources available are paid by using military threats and force, bribes, and keeping questionable alliances in the region. Besides the costs paid in taxes and loss of life in conflicts there, the subsidization of oil consumption has produced a US economy and infrastructure that is not founded on true market costs. As it becomes necessary to either go to war over more energy or change energy sources, there will be even higher costs to pay.

Finally, short of occupation and nationalization of foreign oil fields with the military will to defend against competitors, there is no way "secure" foreign oil as long as it is treated as a commodity on the world market. It is a dwindling resource which faces ever-rising demand. The only solution outside of major conflict is that oil prices will compel industry and innovation to a new energy source before
there is a major crisis.

i was fixing up my tomato plants. they're so huge that they've started toppling, so i was trying to put as much support on it as possible. it turned my hands green.

those flowers finally decided to do something useful. that is the biggest, but there are 2 others. the biggest is about 5 or 6 inches long already. i need to find out when i need to pick it.

also:

For heavy fruit set in tomatoes, night temperature is more important than day temperature. Tomatoes like wide swings in temperatures day to night with 77-86 F days and 60.8 to 68 night as optimal. Fruit set is poor when temperatures hit over 86C or below 59C. If night temperatures exceed 75 or daytime temperatures reach 100+, tomatoes will drop blossoms or not set fruit. High temperatures raise havoc with tomato flower fertilization by not only reducing pollen production but also reducing the viability of the ovule (plant ovary).

i've been cleaning up my hard drive for the eventual reformat that's coming soon. it's the best way to keep a computer running smooth. start from scratch, and if your running a windows machine, scrape scratch down about 50%, and you're good.

one thing that needs to be back up is photos. i've been accumulating them much quicker now that i have a digital camera, and most are just sitting in one directory with nothing more than a serial number for a name. i've started putting them into directories by months or events when they were taken, and i've made progress. but i've found a few that i thought i should post. here goes:

In a surprise move to some, but not to others, Chuck-a-rama today announced that it is entering into a business agreement with the LDS Church in which Chuck-a-rama will provide free meals during all church activities. living in moab, it is a curious thing so far.

i'm currently taking a wilderness first responder course so that i can get my raft guide license, which in turn will allow me to spend the summer working as a raft guide on the colorado and green rivers.

the first responder course has been very interesting so far. interesting types of people spend their summers as i do. and a good variety of them are represented in my course.

for instance, this morning we started the section on poisoning. in it is included drug-caused poisonings. when the instructor (a med-student from the university of utah) began talking about mushrooms, he was quickly interrupted by an older student, who began describing in much detail the differences between the mushrooms show in the slideshow. he said which were poisonous, which were hallucinogenic, which were edible.

then there were ticks.

the first image was of a man pulling down the edge of his underwear to show a tick embedded in his hip. that elicited the response, "free beer if you show your ticks," and "it's rough when you get them on your boys."

more interesting info: according to the med-student, normal bowel-movement range from once every 3 days to 3 times a day. so if you're going 4 times a day, that's too much.

and of course, if you have a bloody nose that just won't stop, you can use an item called a rhino-pack, which can be used to plug a nose and absorb blood. if you don't for some reason want to buy one of these over-priced items, their is an identical item that sells for much cheaper. they're called tampons.

btw, i've got a pretty good tan on my arms.

i was about to use a song lyric for the title of this post, but then thought better of it.

two or so weeks of school left, so much to do.

i'm currently setting up base camp at the downtown library, i plan to get a ton of shite completed before i leave later this afternoon. wish me luck. the internet collection is pretty slow.... all those gamers on the regular computers, probably.

so here's the recap of the last 1.5 weeks.

april 9: st george. attended washington county democrat convention, gave a small speech for the candidate i'm helping. visited my parent's st george house for the first time ever, though it has been there for almost two years now. but it's been longer than that since i've visited st george.

april 11-14: who knows? school, i assume. but unforetunately, i've not been paying too much attention. i did kick ass on my arabic test (100% with the extra credit problems), which should make up for the fact that i never turn in homework.

april 15: 400 miles of driving with a friend only to arrive to find that my car is still not fixed. they have everything finished, but are missing a couple of brackets to mount the bumper. next week? maybe.

april 16-17: moab. i leave slc at 4:45am and arrive a bit after 8am. after breakfast, i arrive for my job interview/training. first off all us newbies are told that we have jobs, provided we make it through training. cool. 3 different runs down portions of the colorado river over the two days. i tweaked my ankle and was sunburnt slightly in two different spots, but had tons of fun.

so the wireless connection is spotty at best here in the library. i was so pissed that it was going in and out that i turned on the wireless detector and walked around till i found a spot with good reception. wtg me for being nerdy.

time to do some schoolwork. at least, for a little bit. saguaros, here i come!
